What is the difference between CE certification and UKCA certification?

The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessment) mark is a certification mark for products sold in the UK (England, Wales, and Scotland) market after Brexit. It covers most of the products that previously required CE certification.

1、 UKCA marking mandatory usage time:

Mandatory enforcement starting from January 1st, 2021

Manufacturers are required to immediately apply the new UKCA mark to goods sold in the UK starting from January 1, 2021. The UK encourages manufacturers to prepare in advance for the use of the UKCA mark as soon as possible before this date.

2、 Transition period from CE marking to UKCA marking:

Before January 1, 2022, in order to give companies time to adapt to the new requirements, in most cases, manufacturers can still use the CE mark before January 1, 2022. Compulsory implementation of UKCA certification after the transition period expires.

3、 The conditions for using the new UKCA mark immediately after January 1, 2021 are as follows:

All products launched in the UK market

Various products protected by laws involving UKCA markings.

The product requires mandatory third-party qualification assessment,

The qualification assessment of products is carried out by UK accredited bodies (UK accredited organizations, accredited third-party organizations or user inspection bodies - collectively referred to as UK accredited bodies).

4、 UKCA certification process:

The UKCA certification process is the same as the EU CE certification process, generally divided into the following six steps:

1. Determine applicable UK regulations and standards

2. Self verification of product compliance

3. Determine whether a UK notified body is required for conformity assessment

4. Check the conformity of the product

5. Save the required technical documents

6. Paste UKCA logo on the product and issue UKCA DoC

5、 Regarding the UKCA logo:

1. The UKCA mark is applicable to most (but not all) products under the current CE marking scheme.

2. The rules for UKCA labeling are basically copied from the EU's CE labeling rules. That is to say, the UKCA logo is also based on the principle of the manufacturer's declaration of conformity. Products that can be marked with CE based on self declaration can also be marked with UKCA based on self declaration.

3. Products marked with UKCA are only applicable to the UK market. Products that currently require CE marking will continue to use the CE marking when entering the EU market.

4. The usage rules of the UKCA mark are the same as the CE mark: it must be marked on the product by the manufacturer or its representative, not less than 5mm, ensuring clarity and visibility, based on the full set of technical documents and UKDoC, and can be presented to authorities at any time.
